Buying a Used Car: The 10-Minute History Check

The single most expensive mistake in buying a used car is the journey wasted on a viewing the listing should never have made it to. A few minutes of background work eliminates most of those journeys. Here is the checklist.

Step 1 — Get the VIN, not just the registration

Ask the seller for the full 17-character VIN. A good seller will send it without hesitation. If they refuse or stall, that on its own is enough information to walk away. There is no legitimate reason to withhold a VIN from a serious buyer.

Step 2 — Check the public registers

In the UK, the MOT history check on gov.uk is free and instant: dates, mileage, advisories and failures going back years. In most EU countries the equivalent annual inspection register is available online too. Run the registration through it before you do anything else.

Look for: a steadily increasing mileage line, advisories that match the seller's description of the car, and no large unexplained gaps.

Step 3 — Pull the manufacturer service history

The most useful comparison is between the service history mileages and the MOT mileages. If they tell the same story, the car is what the seller says it is. If they disagree, you have the evidence you need to walk away (or to negotiate hard).

Step 4 — Check finance and write-off status

Outstanding finance, insurance write-offs, stolen records and import status are all checked through specialised registers (HPI in the UK; equivalents in most EU markets). These are separate from the service history but worth running on the same VIN at the same time.

Step 5 — Decide before you travel

If steps one to four come back clean, the car is worth a viewing. If any step throws a flag, the car is not. Either way you have made the call from your sofa instead of from the seller's driveway.
